Instagram is always finding ways to improve their user experience and with the Instagram Layout Mode, they hit the nail right on the head. The feature added a new layer of creativity and fun to Instagram Stories, a fantastic addition to the amazing collection of creative tools that the platform has introduced over the years.
This is an in-depth guide into the Instagram Layout mode and, by the end of this article, you’ll be rushing to try it out on your Story!
What Is The Instagram Layout Feature?
In December 2019, the social media platform announced Instagram Layouts. This was a smart move for the social media giant because everybody loves a good collage! Their mix-and-match nature tends to be great for creative design and visual playing.
Previously, Instagram users had to rely on external, third-party apps to combine different images. Thus, the platform’s developers eliminated the need to leave the app to get collaging.
With the feature, users can create an Instagram Story collage with up to six photos using different grid options or looks. You can upload existing images from your gallery, as well as take pics on your IG camera to add to your collage.
Not only this but you can still take advantage of the spunky elements available on Stories like text, emojis, and filters.
Interested in trying it out? Here’s how you can find and use it for yourself.
How To Use The Instagram Layout Mode On Your Instagram Stories
To use it on the app, follow these steps:
- Open and log in to your application on any device.
- Click on the ‘Your Story’ circle in the top-left corner. Or tap on the ‘+’ icon in the top-right corner and navigate the bottom menu to ‘story’. Or just swipe left.
- Click on the divided square option on the left-hand side menu.
- Choose the grid you want to use.
- To upload an image, tap on the collage block you want it to be in. Press the blue plus sign in the bottom left corner and select the picture you want to use. Or you can take a picture on the app camera.
- Once you’ve uploaded all the images, tap on the checkmark. Now you can add Story elements like Stickers.
- When you’re all happy, tap on ‘Your story’ to share.
How To Use The Instagram Layout Mode On Your Feed
The internal feature only works on your Instagram Story but Instagram created the perfect app to match the feature for your feed. To make feed collages using Instagram’s Layout app:
- Download the app from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store and open it.
- Select up to nine images you would like to add to your collage.
- Choose a grid option at the top of your screen.
- To edit, tap on the image. Resize, mirror, or flip and insert borders, too!
- Share to Instagram or Facebook, or save to your device.
Why Use The Instagram Layout Mode?
The Layout mode is a useful content creation tool, one you can play around and have fun with. Collages are popular among content creators and influencers, so you can jump onto the trend to keep your content strategy on the ball and uber cool.
Using the feature also means that you don’t have to waste time searching for and downloading external picture-mixing apps. It’s convenient, handy, and super exciting!
Bonus Tips: Get Creative With Instagram Layouts!
But what can you actually do with Instagram Layouts? Here are some cool collage content ideas you can use for your account.
Contrast Before & After Shots
With a split-screen (one with two shots) you can play with the idea of contrast or comparison. Show an image of an item before, and then insert the after picture next to it to highlight the difference. This is particularly effective if you’re promoting a product that results in the ‘better’, second version.
Display Various Items In A Product Line Or Collection
Maybe you’re testing out a new look for your products or trying to find out which of your existing products is a fan fave. You can create a collage with images of a different product in each block (up to 9 blocks using the Layout app, 6 using the Instagram Story option).
Label each block differently and ask your audience to comment with their favorite number or letter. Voila! A cool, visual survey!
The multiple block option is also a good way to display a variety of items you have on offer. For example, a clothing line might do a collage with the same t-shirt in different colors, or worn by people in different sizes.
This brings your business’ product options to the fore, making it convenient for your customers to find what they’re looking for.
Use Color & Text To Boost Your Message
It’s important to consider design elements and the aesthetic of your page when creating your collage. Think about the color combinations you use: how can you play with different colors for visual dynamism?
Also, think about text as a design element. Try bold fonts in different colors and sizes and see how it might enhance your collage.
Play With Instagram Features
Your collage works just like a normal Instagram Story. You can add stickers, emojis, links, and more. You can also add fun borders to style your collage. And try mixing different visual mediums like a photograph against an animation. Just play around a little and see what works for you!
When we think about collages, the first thing that comes to mind might be crafts, glitter, and a glue gun. And, honestly, Instagram has kept the fun adventure of pasting together cool bits and pieces with their Layout feature.
The Instagram collage effect is playful and easy-to-use, with all the joy of experimenting with different elements to try and get the look you want.
So, if you didn’t get started on a new IG collage as we did halfway through this article, then you might want to log in right away… Add a filter there, an emoji or two, and maybe a little clip of music? Perfect!
